From a childhood in the mountains of Austria to semi-retirement in Tasmania, Edith Emery has had a fascinating life. She took charge of her education in Vienna, was thrown into the political turmoil that followed the arrival of Hitler, escaped, married, then raised a child as an enemy alien in occupied France. She confronted the emotional, moral and political issues of a turbulent era with determination and resourcefulness. She was introduced to socialism in her youth, has spoken out for the rights of the Spanish peasantry, the Jews in Europe, the Palestinians in Israel, the Vietnamese during the Australian· involvement in Vietnam.
She is a qualified doctor and architect, a teacher, linguist, artist, author... has a deep interest in people and cultures, and a love of travel. Her story is one of adventure, of opportunities grasped, of fateful acceptance of the inevitable, and of many friends worldwide.
It is as much as one could hope to squeeze into a single life.
